Fig 35. Doppler-Fizeau effect. When Earth moves away from star S, as at E2, it receives from star S light of lower frequency than when it is at E1, at which point it moves in a sense towards the light source.

S is a star assumed to be fixed (or in any case in constant motion in this interval of time), which for convenience is situated on the plane of the ecliptic. This star emits light rays characteristic of the chemical elements that compose it. Their frequency is perfectly known; for example, sodium has two distinct rays with wavelengths 589 and 589.6 nanometres. When Earth is at E1 and moving towards the star, the apparent frequency is greater; conversely, it is lower and thus redder when Earth is at E2. This shift in frequencies is a strong indication of Earth’s orbiting (see calculation in Appendix A).
